Majorca has a lot of beautiful beaches and resorts which retain their Spanish heritage, along with, it must be said, a lot of Anglicised resorts with plenty of British bars and facilities for Brits abroad. That’s why Majorca is one of the top destinations for UK travellers looking for a great beach holiday, especially when on a budget.

The bay at Puerto Pollensa

Majorca also has some lovely hidden gems, and one we wanted to bring to your attention is the gorgeous resort of Puerto Pollensa which lies on the north west coast of Majorca. It’s a beautiful and relatively underdeveloped port village with really superb beaches, and plenty of wonderful restaurants serving authentic Spanish food. I’ve personally been there several times on family holidays and it’s one of our favorite resorts because it is quiet (no noisy nightlife, discos, British bars), and it feels very very safe. There’s a lovely promenade and pine walk which takes you right along the sea front, and a wonderful range of accomodation from self catering apartments and small hotels right through to large out of town compexes offering all inclusive deals. We had some of the best Majorcan food imaginable, some lovely local stews, and also the obligatory Paella, which was better than anything we’ve ever had anywhere else and probably half the price of a London tapas bar.

Pollensa town the walk to the chapel

Puerto Pollensa (Port de Pollenca) is also a short bus ride away from Pollensa town itself which is an amazing fortified Roman town full of fantastic windy roads full of quality shops (not just your regular tourist shops either as this is a town lived in by wealthy Majorcans) and a long stone pathway which leads to an ancient chapel called the Mare de Déu del Peu de la Creu (Mother of God at the Foot of the Cross). The views at the top of the pathway are absolutely breathtaking.

Puerto Pollensa is not for young groups of friends looking for exciting nightlife, it’s for couples, singles and families who want a peaceful holiday away from the mad crowds. It also isn’t the cheapest resort in terms of food and drink prices, but the fact that things cost a little more may actually be one of the factors that have allowed it to retain its character and not be overrun by the masses. It’s very smart and extremely well maintained. The town square is immaculate and so are the beaches.

As well as Pollensa town, it’s also possible to travel to other nearby places of interest. Alcudia is just along the coast and it has a lovely old town full of character as well as a resort area with plenty of British bars and cafes if that’s what you’re after.

I stayed in two very different places. One was a small Hotel complex called Flora Apartments which was about a five minute walk from the beach front. Flora was excellent. It was cheap, very clean, and well maintained. The facilities were perfectly adequate (we weren’t planning on staying in our rooms all week) and it had its own small pool area and bar, though little in the way of entertainment. However, we were travelling with a small child so that didn’t matter, in fact it was better for us to have some peace and quiet in the evening. It was also full of couples and families, which meant there were no groups of drunks rampaging through the hotel in the early hours, a problem that now afflicts many hotels and complexes across Europe.

The next time we stayed in Club Del Sol, a larger resort which offered all inclusive options and had a bigger pool area and a kids club. It also had

Pine Walk Puerto Pollensa

a mini disco and entertainment in the evenings, but it was a good 20 minute walk from Puerto Pollensa itself – fine if your children are in prams and can be pushed along the roadside by the grown ups, but not so good if they have to walk. There are buses though, and a taxi should only cost around 5 Euros. We stayed bed and breakfast, though many went for the all inclusive option. We found the food to be very good, and we had dinner there once or twice and that was also good. The entertainment was also good, and there was an arcade, table tennis, and other activities on offer. I’d definitely recommend it, and it was very cheap as well.

If you speak to someone who has been to Puerto Pollensa the chances are, that their eyes will glaze over and they’ll start to wax lyrical about the sheer loveliness of the place. The friendly locals, the pine walk, the delicious local food and the beautiful beaches. Many people who go there return again and again because it becomes a favorite holiday resort and it has a large almost fan base in the UK because its the sort of place that you think you’re never going to find these days due to mass tourism. People tend to feel that it’s somewhere that they’ve discovered that’s all theirs, their secret holiday resort. I really recommend it and I’m sure it will work it’s magic on you in just the same way.

There are some seriously good package holiday deals to Puerto Pollensa in June and July, and even in August, when the school holidays kick in, you can still find good deals because everyone is fighting for your holiday custom this year.

If you are looking for a high quality beach holiday that’s stylish, classy and not over run with British influence, then take a look at Puerto Pollensa now. You really won’t regret it, nor will you ever forget it.
